Looking After The Environment

The development of Salutation Yard was undertaken with regard to its’ potential environmental impact. This involved considering environmental issues in both the short and long term and devising a plan to minimize environmental harm and promote ongoing sustainability.

These plans were first put in to action throughout the building phase. Wherever possible materials were retained and/or reused. If new goods were needed they were locally sourced if attainable. When available, local craftspeople were engaged to carry out the construction work; they used traditional materials and techniques. For example, lime mortar pointing was applied to the exterior of all the barns and byres.

Efforts to ensure Salutation Yard is sustainable for the future involved, among other things a comprehensive research in to heating systems. Having carefully considered the options we chose to make the commitment of installing a wood pellet boiler.Wood Pellets have been hailed by many as the fuel of the future. Wood pellets (biomass) are a relatively cheap, renewable, sustainable and low carbon fuel. They burn the carbon captured from the atmosphere when the tree was growing. They are a natural fuel made from waste wood, are small in size, highly dense and compact unlike other biomass fuels, such as wood chips and logs.

No chemicals or additives are used in manufacturing wood pellets.

After consulting with the distributors Organic Energy and Sustaburn, we decide to install an Ökofen pellematic wood pellet boiler. These boilers are regarded as the most advanced and efficient of their kind anywhere in the world. They burn the wood pellets so efficiently, CO2 emissions are kept at a very low level.
